The true story of Winnie-the-Pooh began with a Canadian veterinarian who was serving in World War I who spotted the bear cub sitting in the lap of a man at a train station. The soldier/veterinarian, Harry Coleburn, bought the cub and took her along with him to training camp in England. As the war escalated, however, Dr. Coleburn decided to give Winnie to the London Zoo for safekeeping. There she stayed until her death at age twenty. But while at the zoo, Christopher Robin Milne happened to visit, and found Winnie enchanting. The rest, as they say, is history.
