Journalist Peter Zheutlin rode along with Greg Mahle as he traveled his well worn route from the midwest to the deep south in a tractor trailer to pick up a load of dogs. The trek back north with the dogs is their highway of hope, finally getting closer to their forever homes and away from the nightmare of southern animal control.
This is an eye-opening book about the cultural differences in this country that lead to overpopulation, cruelty, neglect, and death of thousands of animals every day. It's also a wonderful tribute to the rescuers who have put their lives on hold in order to stem the tide of death. In the end, although they seem to be swimming against that tide, we are left with hope that the situation will ever so slowly improve because of people like Greg Mahle.
